A quick series of complaints

As I sit here, DearWife is watching the end of an awful movie: "Little Children." I know, you are saying, there's lots of sex, and Kate Winslet is in it, how can it suck? First, it's a suburban angst movie. All suburban angst movies suck (including in retrospect, "American Beauty"). I can't sit and watch Jennifer Connelly or Kate Winslet or the gay guy from Angels In America whine about their lives without thinking how ludicrous the whole thing is. Can Kate Winslet really understand what it's like to be a hum drum suburban mom? And why the hell is it that every woman who is portrayed as 'normal' is always a bitch? A woman who doesn't cheat on her husband and cares immensely about her kids? She just doesn't get it.

There is a particularly annoying scene, where some women have a book club. The first problem with this scene is that the book they are reading was not pre-approved by Oprah. As everyone knows, there are a few rules about suburban wife-dom. One is that you must sooner or later play Bunco, and another is that if you join a book club, it has to be Oprah approved.

The book they chose (as an annoying plot device) was "Madame Bovary." The basic plot of this book is that a woman marries a guy, takes all of his money, sleeps with another man, and then sucks down some rat poison. Winslet's character chooses to define Emma Bovary as a hero, a feminist.

Which really brings me to another pet peeve. Why is it that every romantic chick movie involves the female protagonist cheating on her husband? "The English Patient" "The Bridges of Madison County" etc. etc. etc. Two words. Hypo. Critical. If that movie is about a man doing the same thing, he's an ass.

But if the husband spends his whole life working his ass off in the fields, and then spends the little free time he has to give his wife some alone time, then her cheating is 'romantic.'

Sure.

One last thing, and this is a small complaint about DearWife. I'm just interested to see if anyone else has the same experiences that I do. Whenever I'm watching sports, she's never in the same room. Caddyshack comes on? Suddenly there's clothes to wash. But when she gets her weekly chick flick from Netflix in the mail, it is very very important that we watch it together. Hmmm....

this is why so many guys have to build a "shop" out back . . . and they justify the electricity for some power tool or other, but we all know it is the ONLY way they keep warm after snubbing the weekly chick flix ;)

I so need a shop. But, I must admit that DW did not get the last chick flick either. It's back to Farscape on Netflix for a while.

Momma Musky knows better than put on a chick flick and expect me to watch it. I get bored and go do something else. Of course, we rarely watch TV together becuase we are having sex most of the time.......wait...no that was a hallucination.......
