Durbin Apology

From an AP Story (linked above via Daily Herald):

“Some may believe that my remarks crossed the line,” the Illinois Democrat said. “To them I extend my heartfelt apologies.”
Let me translate. "I didn't do anything wrong. But some people do think I was wrong. I'm sorry those people think I'm wrong." It's Durbin's way of saying "Move along, nothing to see here." This is fairly standard among politicians. So I'm not surprised. But...

"His voice quaking and tears welling in his eyes, Sen. Dick Durbin apologized Tuesday for comparing American interrogators at the Guantanamo Bay prison camp to Nazis and other historically infamous figures."
If he's so worked up, why not actually apologize?
